WA: Controversial plan to take away cars from young 'hoons'

The West Australian government says plans to confiscate cars from young drivers whospeed or drink-drive will help make the state's roads safer.

Police Minister MICHELLE ROBERTS says the so-called hoon laws are needed to stop spirallingcarnage on the roads.

In the past month, five young lives have been lost on the road due to high speeds.

The new legislation is expected to be introduced to Parliament in November.

Under the new law, drivers aged between 17 and 24 can expect instant licence disqualificationif caught speeding excessively and confiscation of vehicles from repeat offenders.
