Fed: One.Tel staff could be re-employed - Silbermann

CANBERRA, Feb 12 AAP - Staff left jobless after One.Tel's collapse could be re-employedat a new phone company being launched by former directors of the failed telco.

The two businessmen, Mark Silbermann and Kevin Beck, last night announced plans tolaunch a new cut-price phone company named TeleOne Pty Ltd.

TeleOne last night announced it had signed agreements for the provision of fixed wiretelephony services with major operators.

Mr Silbermann today said former One.Tel staff, who lost their jobs nine months agowhen the company collapsed, could be re-employed at TeleOne.

"We would like to introduce, or reintroduce competition by allowing people and helpingpeople to save money on their fixed wire telephony," Mr Silbermann told ABC radio.

"And the second main objective is to re-employ key One.Tel staff."

TeleOne is due to be launched in April.

Mr Silbermann said both men had been working on a plan for the company for several months.

The Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) is reportedly trying tohave both Mr Silbermann and former One.Tel boss Jodee Rich disqualified from being directorsor managers of any Australian company.

But Mr Beck said he had confidence in the new venture.

"We are confident we will win back the patronage of many customers as well as employa number of our former staff to run the operation," he said in last night's statement.

"TeleOne will avoid the major costs associated with other start-ups in the telecommunicationssector, through signing aggressive wholesale agreements to compete with Telstra in interstateand overseas calls, with the net result being significant savings to Australian consumers.

"TeleOne plans to heighten the level of competition through very aggressive pricingof phone calls."

Details of the company's staff plans would remain confidential at this stage but wouldbecome clear closer to the launch date for the company, Mr Silbermann said.
