QLD: University academics to strike over pay claim

Academic staff at the University of Queensland walk off the job today after negotiations
over a pay claim became bogged down.

President of the Queensland University Academic Staff Association CULDIP BEDI, says the
strike will last 24 hours.

Mr BEDI, who is also University of Queensland branch president of the National Tertiary
Education Union, says many classes will be cancelled.

He says 800 of the university's 2,000 academic and research staff belong to the union.

But the university maintains it will be business as usual for most students.



Mr BEDI says academic staff will picket the university's St Lucia campus and then rally at
4.30pm outside the university's senate meeting at the Brian Wilson Chancellory.
