Fed: Holiday road toll now at 72, among worst in recent years
SYDNEY, Jan 2 AAP - Australia has recorded one of its worst holiday road tolls of recent years.
With two days still remaining in the Christmas-New Year toll period, three deaths in
Victoria today pushed the number of fatalities to 72, surpassing last year's 71.
A higher number of deaths has been recorded only three times since 1996-97 -- 80 in
1997-98 and again in 2000-2001, and 77 in 1998-99.
Two paramedics and a cattle truck driver were killed in separate accidents in rural
Victoria today.
